Door Entry and Access Control for Student Accommodation

Student accommodation has to stay secure while residents, visitors, couriers and contractors come and go all day, and while whole buildings change occupants every academic year. BAS-IP combines IP door entry panels with BAS-IP Link, a central platform for users, credentials, calls and access events. Operators, universities and developers use it to run entrances and shared spaces from one place, in new purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) and in refurbished halls alike.

Secure Entry for Student Residences

Main entrances, flats and shared facilities need different levels of access. With BAS-IP panels and Link, you decide who gets in, when, and with which credential.

Know Who Is at the Door Before It Opens

Video calls from the entrance panel let a student or the reception team see and speak to a caller before the door is opened, supporting the caller identification requirement in the ANUK/Unipol National Codes.

The AA-07FBI STAINLESS and AA-14FBIS panels have passed the testing required for Secured by Design certification. The AA-07FBI STAINLESS has a 3 mm stainless steel front rated IK08, and both models provide an output for an induction loop for people with hearing impairments.

Guest and Delivery Passes That Expire on Their Own

Residents and staff can issue temporary passes as a QR code, an access code or a web link, choose which doors each pass opens and limit it by date, time or number of entries.

A friend visiting for the weekend gets in for the weekend, a courier for a single delivery, and the pass stops working when its period ends. Every entry is recorded in the event log, and the team can withdraw any pass early in BAS-IP Link.

Simpler Move-In and Move-Out

Arrivals weekend no longer means hundreds of manual entries. Residents can be uploaded to BAS-IP Link in bulk from a spreadsheet and assigned to their buildings and flats in one step.

Cards, key fobs and UKEY mobile keys can be issued with a validity period that matches the tenancy, so they stop working on the agreed date. If a student leaves early, the team withdraws their credentials, and any guest passes they issued, from one place.

One Platform for the Whole Residence

Reception, security, and facilities teams work in the same system, whether you manage one building or a portfolio across several cities.

Reception and Security Stay in Control

A concierge button on the entrance panel connects visitors straight to reception. Staff can answer calls in a web browser through BAS-IP Link or on a concierge terminal, see who is calling, and open the door remotely.

The event log records calls, door openings, and credential use. Separate roles for administrators, concierge staff, and residents give each person the tools they need and nothing more.

Shared Spaces, Floors and Lifts

Access rules and schedules control gyms, study rooms, laundries and bike stores, and residents can book shared spaces in the BAS-IP Link app.

With the EVRC-IP lift module or the KONE integration, each credential, including a guest pass, can be limited to the floors its holder needs. Residents can also call a lift from the app before they reach it.

Works With Your Existing Access Control

Many residences already run an access control system for flat and room doors. BAS-IP panels connect to it over Wiegand: the built-in output passes card, key fob and UKEY credentials, and the SH-12 module adds QR codes, face recognition and access codes.

BAS-IP also works with Gallagher, Inner Range, ACTpro, Rosslare, and the other platforms on our integrations page, as well as with KONE lifts and Milestone and Axis video systems.

FAQs about Student Accommodation Door Entry Systems

Q: Do students need an indoor monitor in every room?

No. Calls from the entrance panel can go straight to the BAS-IP Link app on a student’s phone, where they can see the caller and open the door. Each app uses its own licence, so the number of licences follows the number of apps in use rather than the number of rooms. Indoor monitors remain an option for studios, staff areas or reception.

Q: Can students use their existing university cards?

That depends on how the card is encoded. BAS-IP panels such as the AA-07FBI STAINLESS read 125 kHz proximity cards and a wide range of MIFARE cards, including MIFARE Classic, MIFARE Plus and DESFire EV1 and EV2, as well as NFC and Bluetooth mobile credentials. Sample university cards should be tested during project design.

Q: How does BAS-IP support the ANUK/Unipol National Code?

The National Codes expect an intercom not to let anyone into the building until the resident can establish who is calling. BAS-IP video entry panels show the caller to the resident or to reception before the door is opened. Code compliance covers the whole building and how it is managed, so the door entry system is one part of it rather than a guarantee on its own.

Q: Can BAS-IP Link run on our own server?

Yes. BAS-IP Link is available as Link Cloud, hosted in BAS-IP data centres certified to ISO 27001, or as Link Selfhost on your own server. Cloud needs no server of your own, while Selfhost keeps data on your infrastructure for organisations with strict data policies. Available features depend on the licence, so the deployment is chosen for each project.

Q: Is BAS-IP suitable for refurbishing existing halls as well as new PBSA?

Yes. BAS-IP is an IP system powered over Ethernet (PoE), and the panels can be flush or surface mounted, so it fits both new buildings and refurbishment projects. Buildings of different ages can be managed together in BAS-IP Link. Existing cabling, locks and door hardware should be assessed during the site survey.

Whether you are planning a new PBSA scheme or modernising existing halls, BAS-IP and our UK partners can help you choose the right panels, credentials and Link deployment. Eligible BAS-IP hardware is covered by a 3-year warranty under our regional warranty policy. Contact our team to discuss your project.
